Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a healthcare system that dates back several thousand years. It has become very popular now in the West, due to the positive outcome it has when treating many common conditions.

Being a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the acupuncturist looks at the individual as well as any condition or symptoms when planning a treatment.

The theory of Acupuncture lies in the flow of Qi throughout the body which can be accessed through various acupoints on the meridians or energy channels of the body.

What can Acupuncture treat?

There has been significant research on the benefits of Acupuncture, carried out in different countries including China, USA and the UK. The Worldwide Health Organisation (WHO) recognises that it is beneficial for treating over 90 different conditions or symptoms such as back pain, shoulder and neck pain and stiffness, knee problems, depression, anxiety, headaches, insomnia and IBS. The list is too many to mention and includes most muscular/skeletal conditions, emotional, digestive and neurological conditions.

How does it work?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the state of the Qi in the body (and mind) is very important. A really healthy person should be aches and pain free, energised, be emotionally balanced, having a focused and clear mind. If the Qi flow is correct throughout the energy channels and organs then the person should feel healthy in these ways, although unfortunately with life events and demands it is very easy for this careful balance to be affected. Acupuncture seeks to restore this balance using both local acupoints (near to the site of the problem) or distal acupoints (further away on different channels).

What should I expect from a treatment?

Before the commencement of any treatment I would take details of your general health, relevant medical history and information on any symptoms. Depending on what these involve the Diagnosis could take up to 30 minutes, so many first appointments could be at least 75 minutes long. I would also look at levels of energy, sleep, diet, exercise and lifestyle for example.

The needles used are very fine (almost as fine as a hair but not quite !) sterile and single use. They are relatively pain free and are typically left in place for between 15 and 30 minutes. Most people find the treatment quite pleasant and relaxing. Depending on the condition being treated, after the needles have been removed I may do some Tui Na massage to enhance the effect of the treatment.

It is best to wear loose and comfortable clothing, to help you relax on the treatment table/couch.

I follow strict professional standards of hygiene and health and safety.
